Tecumseh Council Shooting Sports Training - Spring 2012

In an effort to enhance Shooting Sports in Tecumseh Council, Venture Crew 71 is sponsoring and conducting the following training courses for certifications required by BSA to run the various shooting ranges and activities at Camp Birch and shooting activities allowed at unit, district and council levels through the council. All shooting activities must be supervised by properly certified adults. BB and Archery ranges must be supervised by BSA certified adults. Rifle and shotgun ranges must be supervised by an NRA/NMLRA certified Range Safety Officers and NRA/NMLRA Certified Instructors for the discipline being fired must be present. They may not be the same person. Many Packs, Troops, and Venture Crews want to participate in shooting sports activities throughout the year and we need properly certified adults to enable these activities. These courses are presented by NRA Certified Instructors, NRA Training Counselors, BSA certified Shooting Sports Directors and ODNR Instructors. All the courses will be held at Camp Birch either at the training lodge or the Turner Building depending on the number of participants that sign up. The basic courses are open to all scouts, venturers, and scouters and others as approved. The instructor course is open to adults and youth age 13 or older. Youth ages 13-17 may become NRA Apprentice Instructors. Youth ages 18-20 may become NRA Assistant Instructors. Only adults age 21 and older may become certified NRA Instructors. Depending upon the response the class sizes may have to be limited.

All reservations for NRA and ODNR courses must be made four (4) weeks prior to the course so that we may order sufficient materials and supplies. Payment will be by cash or check at the door. Instructor and RSO students will also be responsible for NRA certification fees of $20 to $26 after course completion.
BSA Cub Scout Adult BB and Archery Range Training – Cub Scouts are only allowed to shoot archery and/or BB guns at council sponsored events. These events must be supervised by BSA certified adults age 18 or older. This course is given to certify adults to supervise the Archery and BB gun ranges for Tecumseh Council sponsored Cub Scout activities. This course will be offered on 17 March 2011 at a cost of $30 per participant. Participants will be asked to gain hands-on experience supervising Cub Scout range activities sometime during Spring and Summer 2012. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM. Range Safety Officer (RSO) Training – This is the NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course which when passed results in certification as a Range Safety Officer. This course will include the NRA Home Firearm Safety course and the Cub Scout BB and Archery Range training. This course will be offered on 24 - 25 Mar 2012 at a cost of $80 per participant. This class will include the Cub Scout BB and Archery range Training. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM. Participants should bring a sack lunch. Due to the length of the course it may have to be extended to the following day. All supplies for the course will be furnished. Hands-on range RSO experience will be necessary during the NRA Basic Shotgun course and/or the NRA Basic Pistol course in the following weeks. Home Firearm Safety Training – This is the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course. It will be held in conjunction with the NRA RSO course above.
Basic Shotgun Shooting Training – This is the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course. This course, and a level of firearms pre-qualification are prerequisites for the NRA Shotgun Instructor course. The pre-qualification will be included in this course for instructor candidates. This course will be offered on 31 March 2012 at a cost of $65 per participant for the basic course and $95 for instructor candidates. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM. Shotgun Instructor Training – This is he NRA Shotgun Instructor course which if passed results in recommendation for certification as an NRA Shotgun Instructor. This course includes the NRA Basic Instructor Training. The NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course and a level of shooting pre-qualification are prerequisites for this course. The pre-qualification will be accomplished during the Basic Rifle Course. This course will be offered on 28 - 29 April 2012 at a cost of $100 per participant. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM each day. Participants should bring a sack lunch. All supplies for the course will be furnished. . Basic Pistol Shooting/Concealed Carry Training – This is the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course. Completion of this course is required for venturers to be allowed to shoot pistols. The completion of this course may be presented to the local sheriff as qualification for Ohio’s concealed carry permit after additional shooting is accomplished. This course is also a prerequisite for the NRA Pistol Instructor course. The pre-qualification for the Pistol Instructor course will be included in this course. This course will be offered on 5 May 2012 at a cost of $60 per Basic participant and $80 for Concealed Carry and Instructor candidates. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM. Participants should bring a sack lunch. Due to the length of the course it may have to be extended to the following day. Additional shooting will be required of the Concealed Carry participants at another time to be scheduled during the class (perhaps the following day). Basic participants will shoot furnished 22 cal pistols and ammunition. Concealed Carry participants may shoot the furnished pistols and ammunition or may bring their own firearms and 200 rounds of ammunition if not 22 long rifle caliber. Pistol Instructor Training – This is he NRA Pistol Instructor course which if passed results in recommendation for certification as an NRA Pistol Instructor. This course includes the NRA Basic Instructor Training. The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course and a level of shooting pre-qualification are prerequisites for this course. The pre-qualification will be accomplished during the Basic Pistol Course. This course will be offered on 12 – 13 May 2012 at a cost of $100 per participant. The class will start at 8:30 AM and last till 5:00 PM each day. Participants should bring a sack lunch. All supplies for the course will be furnished. . ODNR Hunter Safety Course – This is the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) course that is required to purchase an Ohio hunting license. This will be a two day course. This course is open to scouts, venturers and scouters that want to qualify for an initial Ohio hunting license. The course will be offered on 9 Jun 2012 and the cost will be $30 per participant. All Courses will be held at Camp Birch and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some courses will take two days.
