Join us on a Wilderness Catholic Scout Retreat

Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Catholic Committee on Scouting

Who: Older Catholic Boy & Venture Scouts (age 16 – 20), adult Scout leaders.

Where: Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area in northern Minnesota.

When: Monday, June 23 to Tuesday, July 1, 2014

What: A wilderness retreat experience focusing on daily scripture, introspection, and prayer, coupled with the physical challenges and teamwork of high adventure wilderness canoeing. Leaving from Dayton, OH, the first two days are drive--‐days, with an overnight camp in Portage, WI, then on the shores of Moose Lake in the Boundary Waters. June 25 to 29th are on--‐the water, with a crew reunion Mass on Sunday. The final two days are again drive days, returning to Dayton the evening of July 1. You’ll be part of a nine person (maximum) crew. Multiple crews will travel separately in the boundary waters, paddling to a new campsite each night and making camp in primitive conditions. You’ll be expected to participate in gear checks and a provisioning day prior to the trek. See the important dates below.

Cost: The cost for the retreat is $400 per--‐person. Participants are expected to provide their own personal gear (non--‐cotton clothing, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, rain gear, compression dry bag). Details are in the application package.

All participants must:

Be physically fit. You will need to complete a BSA Physical exam (Parts A, B &C) without physical restrictions , and review with your parents & physician the High Adventure notes for Northern Tier in Part D of the medical form. Forms may be found at:

Pass BSA swim test. You’ll need to certify that you have recently passed a BSA swimmer’s test

Active in their parish. This trek is first and foremost, a retreat, in a high adventure setting.

How to apply:

1) Contact Mr. Harry Heaton (see below), for a full application package and release forms.

2) Submit your completed application with a $100 deposit (payable by check made out to the Archdioceses of Cincinnati, CCoS) by Friday, April 4, 2014. Number of crews and space are limited, with priority given to older applicants with demonstrated service to their faith. If you are not selected for this year, your deposit check will be returned. Applicants will be notified by Friday, April 11 whether they are accepted for this year’s retreat.

Friday, Friday, April 4: Applications & deposit due.

Friday, April 11: Notification of acceptance.

Saturday, May 10: Gear check, Dayton OH. Medical forms, swim check forms & $200 installment due.

Saturday, June 14: Provisioning day, Dayton OH. Final gear check & final $100 payment due.
