Technology Message from Chief Scout Executive

In a recent survey of unit leaders, the number one item on their technology wish list was the ability to access and record Scout advancement easily and I’d like to talk about technology in our organization. Our CIO, Dave Campbell, and I are aware of the desire for more technology tools, especially as they relate to the requests you in the in real time (66.3 percent). Number two on their list was the ability for youth and adults to register, be accepted by the unit, and pay their membership fees online (45.1 percent). Our IT team is addressing both of these requests.

Over the past several years we’ve worked on the foundational platforms that will make it possible to deliver the needed and desired tools for our volunteers. What I have come to realize is that the easy part is the front end of a tool—what the users see. The more complex part is the back end—applying our business rules and administrative processes to manage the data the user inputs. Please be assured that these tools are a priority but it is important to take the time necessary to ensure that when they are deployed they are of the highest quality to meet our volunteer’s needs.

I also want to take this opportunity to make sure that you are fully aware of the technology tools that already exist so I’ve attached a list for your review. If you have not already done so, please go to My.Scouting.orgExternal Link to check them out.  (Please notice the “.” between My & Scouting)

Thank you for your service to the youth of America through the BSA.
