Shooting Sports Training


In an effort to train NRA Range Safety Officers, BSA Range Masters, and NRA Instructors to help with the various ranges at Camp Birch this season, Crew 71 is offering the following Shooting Sports Training at reduced cost to scouting associated individuals who intend to support Shooting Sports Activities at Camp Birch.  All courses are taught by fully qualified/certified instructors.


BSA Range Master Course – 18 April 2014 – Cost $15 – Camp Birch – 6:00 to 9:30 PM – This certification is good for two years and will qualify the holder to run Cub Scout ranges (BBs, Archery, Sling Shot), and Boy Scout Archery ranges


NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course – 19 April 2014 – Cost $50 – Camp Birch – 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM – This certification is good for life if renewed periodically and will allow the holder to run Boy Scout and Venturing Firearms ranges in association with NRA Instructors for the disciplines being fired.  An additional $20 fee to the NRA is required for Certification after successful completion of the NRA RSO course.


NRA Basic Pistol Course (with CCW or Instructor course pre-qualification Options) – 3,4 May 2014 - $50/$70 – Classroom Session, 3 May 2014 – 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM – location TBD (not Camp Birch); shooting session, 4 May 2014 - Noon to 4:00 PM - at Camp Birch; – This training is good for life and will allow Venturers to shoot handguns.  This training can pre-qualify participants for the NRA Pistol Instructor course offered at a later date.  The optional CCW option will qualifies for the training requirement to obtain an Ohio CCW permit.  CCW students may bring their own firearms but no live ammunition is permitted in the classroom.  If firearms are not 22 LR caliber, students should bring 200 rounds of ammunition to the range.


NRA Instructor Courses – Taking an NRA Instructor course requires pre-qualification that is accomplished during the NRA Basic course and/or permission of the Training Counselors running the course.  There is time to offer 1 or 2 instructor courses in May or June 2014.  The needed disciplines are Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol, and Muzzle Loading Rifle.  The costs vary but are around $100 each.  The courses to be offered will depend upon interest shown and will be announced later.  An additional $20 fee to the NRA is required for Certification after successful completion of an NRA Instructor course.


To register for any of these courses or to indicate interest in an NRA Instructor Course, contact Ray Blowers by phone at (937) 429-2191 or by E-mail at [Click for member's page] .  Registration must be done 12 days in advance of the NRA courses so that we can get the required materials.  All courses are ‘Pay at the Door’ (Checks to Ray Blowers) and students should dress for the weather and bring a sack lunch for the all-day courses.  All necessary materials, firearms, and 22 LR ammunition are furnished.
