The Prospects are Rich: Learn How
Modern Mining Affects Your Daily Life!

You only have to go back as far as the 2013 National Scout Jamboree for a striking reminder of what mining’s meant to this country. Even the subcamps were named after the many historic West Virginia mines.

And now, through BSA’s latest Merit Badge introduction – Mining in Society, you can explore not only this rich history but also the many ways that the results of mining touch and improve your own life.

BSA, in partnership with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME), officially launched this exciting new merit badge during the SME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT, in late February. This merit badge experience is enriched by the participation of merit badge counselors recruited from within SME’s highly experienced ranks.

Here’s just some of what you can explore through this merit badge’s requirements:
• How every aspect of society relies on mining in some way
• The importance of mining and minerals in our everyday lives
• The key components of mining: exploration, permitting, excavation, processing, production, safety, and reclamation

The Mining in Society Merit Badge Pamphlet is now available in the Tecumseh Council Scout Store!
