A Letter From Your New Camp Director

Greetings,

I’d like to take a moment of your time and introduce myself. My name is Ben Honefanger and I’m the new Camp Director at Camp Hugh Taylor Birch. If you’ve been coming to camp for a few years in a row, you may remember me as the Program Director for the 2013 through the 2015 Summer Camp seasons. I have other camp experience spanning my 13 years of service at Camp Birch, starting as a Counselor in Training and working my way through various program areas and responsibility levels. I also have a rich scouting background, starting my journey in the Cub Scout program, through Boy Scouts, Venturing, and still active as an Adult Leader. As an Adult, I’ve been through various trainings including; Wood Badge, National Camp School for three different certifications, a variety of leader specific trainings, as well as instructing and being on staff for trainings. I’m a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, and am active with Tarhe Lodge.

The reason for sending this letter is less about who I am and more about some of the exciting things we are offing at Camp Birch for the Summer of 2018. I want to personally invite you to join us to celebrate the 80th year of Camp Hugh Taylor Birch. We are putting together a great staff team to deliver quality program that will be memorable and meaningful.  Just to give you a sneak peek into some of the activities and programs for this year that are new or a new twist.

First, I want to touch on our First-Year Camper Program, Tecumseh Island. We are taking it from a half day to full day program. New scouts will have more time to focus on Scout skills and rank advancement, but also will work on Swimming and First Aid Merit Badges. Not only will your boys come out with skills and knowledge to help them get to First Class, but also two Eagle required Merit Badges and a third we will be announcing later. For those scouts who are not strong swimmers, they will be in Instructional Swim to help them build their swimming experience and gain confidence in the water.

Second, we will be offering Cowboy Action Shooting as an activity in our new Rifle Range. Our Camp Ranger Bryan, Summer Shooting Sports Director DL Kaufman, and our Council Shooting Sports Committee have been working hard on the range improvements and new program. Hearing about some of the things they have in store, it’s going to be a blast.

Thirdly, the Mad River Trace program will be extending its time. Instead of just being an evening program, it will start in the afternoon. This is going to give MRT participants new activities, new projects, and more time together for fellowship. Greg Free, Don Rodman, and the MRT elders are building up the program to meet the requests from you for more.

I’m blessed to say that I am a part of this amazing Camp Staff and the exciting Summer of 2018 camp season. I don’t want you and your scouts to miss out on the fun we are going to have. Attached is the link where you can reserve you site for your week of camp.
