Fall 2014 Tecumseh Council Shooting Sports Training Sponsored b Venture Crew 71

Fall 2014 Tecumseh Council Shooting Sports Training Sponsored b Venture Crew 71

In an effort to enhance Shooting Sports in Tecumseh Council, Venture Crew 71 is continuing to sponsor and conduct training courses for certifications required by BSA to run the various shooting activities at Camp Birch and at unit, district and council levels through the council.  All shooting activities must be supervised by properly certified people at approved facilities.  BB and Archery ranges must be supervised by BSA certified Range Masters over 18 Years old.  Rifle, pistol, and shotgun ranges must be supervised by NRA certified Range Safety Officers (RSO) and NRA/NMLRA Certified Instructors for the discipline being fired.  The RSOs and Instructors may not be the same person.

This year we are trying something a little different.  We are going to determine the course offerings by the response to this request for show of interest.  The Basic courses and the RSO/Range Master/Home Firearm Safety courses will be held on 10-12 Oct 2014, and the deadline for show of interest is 23 Sep 2014.  The ODNR Hunter Safety course, Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course, and Instructor Courses will be held on 31 Oct – 2 Nov 2014, and the deadline for show of interest is 14 Oct 2014.  To show interest in any of these courses contact Ray Blowers at the E-mail below.  You must show interest by the deadline if you want a particular course to be offered.  Only show interest if you are planning to attend.    Any of the Basic course group will be held if we have at least 6 participants signed up.  Any of the Instructor course group will be held if we have at least 8 participants signed up.  The BIT course will be held if any Instructor course is held.  The ODNR Hunter Ed course will be held if we have 8 participants.  The detailed schedule and costs for any of the offered courses are listed below.

Many Packs, Troops, and Venture Crews want to participate in shooting sports activities throughout the year and we need properly certified adults to enable these activities.  These courses are presented by NRA Certified Instructors, NRA Training Counselors, BSA certified Shooting Sports Directors and ODNR/DOW Instructors.  All the courses will be held at Camp Birch (either at the Training Lodge, the Adams Building, or the Turner Building depending on the number of participants that sign up).  All courses are open to registered Scouts, Venturers and Scouters.

Participants outside BSA will require approval of the instructors and will be charged an additional $25 per course.

NRA Basic Courses are prerequisites for NRA Instructor Courses.  The instructor courses are open to adults and youth age 14 or older.  Youth ages 14 thru 17 may become NRA Apprentice Instructors.  Youth ages 18 thru 20 may become NRA Assistant Instructors.  Only adults age 21 and older may become certified NRA Instructors or RSOs.   There is no charge and no age requirements for the ODNR courses, but any youth under 11 years old are required to be accompanied by an adult.  Successfully completing the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course allows Venturers to shoot handguns.  Depending upon the response any class sizes may have to be limited.

All courses will be held at BSA Camp Birch, 4023 Swimming Pool Rd., Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387.  There will be signs in the parking lot.

To show interest, contact Ray Blowers by E-mail at [Click for member's page] .    We will inform you by E-mail specifically which courses will be held at the completion of the show-of-interest period.

Payment will be by cash or check at the door.  NRA Instructor and RSO students will also be responsible for NRA certification fees of $20 to $30 on-line after course completion.  Potential course offerings are described below.
